Looking After Your Spa Water

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on how to properly care for your spa or hot tub. Whether you're a new spa owner or a seasoned veteran, maintaining the quality of your spa water and equipment is crucial for a relaxing and healthy experience. From initial set-up procedures to weekly maintenance and troubleshooting, this guide covers everything you need to know to keep your spa running smoothly and your water crystal clear. So, let's dive in and explore the best practices for enjoying your spa to the fullest

Initial Set-Up Procedure

Your spa water will stay fresh for 3-4 months. After this period, it's time to refresh the water.

Prepping Your New Spa

If you've just had a new spa delivered or are changing the water, always start by running a pipe degreaser. This is crucial as new spas may have residual water in the pumps and pipes, which can lead to algae growth. After degreasing, fill your spa with tap water up to the recommended level, ideally through the filter pipe to avoid air blocks. Heat the water to your preferred temperature, which should be between 26-36 degrees Celsius.

Mixing Chemicals Safely

Always add chemicals to water, not the other way around. Use a clean bucket filled halfway with spa water, add the required chemicals, and stir until dissolved. Then, activate the cleaning cycle and slowly pour the dissolved chemicals over the water jetting out from the spa's jets. Dosage directions are usually per 1000 litres: 1 heaped teaspoon equals approximately 6 grams, and 1 heaped tablespoon equals approximately 30 grams.

Key Water Metrics

Keep your chlorine levels between 1-3 ppm, pH between 7.2 - 7.8, and Total Alkalinity between 80 - 160 ppm. Use test strips to monitor these levels and adjust as needed.

Weekly Maintenance Routine

Choose a consistent day each week for maintenance, like every Saturday morning.

Step 1: Shock Treatment

Add 30 grams per 1000L of Spa Shock and activate the cleaning cycle for 40 minutes with the cover off to remove chloramines and bather wastes.

Step 2: Test Water Quality

Use test strips to check the pH and Total Alkalinity, adjusting as necessary.

Step 3: Daily Sanitisation

Continue with your daily dose of Sanitiser Plus, which is 2 teaspoons per 1000L of water.

Repeat these steps weekly until your water reaches the 4-month mark, then it's time to replace it.

How to Drain and Refill Your Spa

  1. Remove the Filter: Take out the filter and set it aside.
  2. Pipe Degreasing: Add 50ml of Spa Pipe Degreaser per 1000L and run the cleaning cycle for 20 minutes. Pause for 30 minutes and then run for another 30 minutes.
  3. Drain the Spa: Empty the spa and hose out any residue. Wipe down the interior with a damp cloth and a bit of Spa Pipe Degreaser.
  4. Refill: Place a hose in the filter pipe to eliminate air blocks and fill with new water.
  5. Replace the Filter: Put the filter back in place.
  6. Restart: Your spa is now ready for the initial set-up procedure again.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Cloudy Water: Adjust pH and Total Alkalinity, add a cap of Water Clarifier per 1000 litres, and circulate.
  • Bad Odour and Cloudy Water: Adjust pH and Total Alkalinity, add Spa Shock and Lithium, and circulate until clear.
  • Foamy Water: Use Anti-Foam as directed on the container.

Enjoy your spa, and keep it sparkling with these easy-to-follow guidelines!

Check pH and total Alkalinity and adjust if necessary. Add 1 cap of water Clarifier per 1000 litres and circulate water for 30 minutes. Depending on how cloudy the water is, more circulating time may be required.

BAD ODOUR AND CLOUDY WATER:

Check pH and Total Alkalinity and adjust if necessary. Add 1 tablespoon of Spa Shock per 1000 litres, circulate for 1 hour. Add 2 Teaspoons of Lithium per 1000 litres and circulate for 1 hour. This should clear it up. If water is still not clear, keep circulating until clear. If water is at least 3 months old, dump it & go though the Start Up Procedure.

FOAMY WATER:

Use Anti Foam and follow the direction on the container.
