Cryptosporidiosis Cases Are Rising in Queensland
Cryptosporidiosis cases are rising across Queensland, with health authorities urging pool and spa owners to stay vigilant. This parasitic infection causes unpleasant and sometimes severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever. With the increase in reported cases, maintaining clean and properly sanitised water has never been more important.
In response, Queensland Health and the Gold Coast Council are conducting widespread testing of commercial heated spas for Legionella and other waterborne pathogens. Heated spas—especially those kept above the mid-30 °C range—can become a breeding ground for bacteria if not properly sanitised. Over time, biofilm can form inside pipework and on spa surfaces. This slimy layer can harbour harmful microorganisms, some of which are resistant to standard chlorine-based treatments.
To prevent contamination in heated spas, we recommend regular water changes and quarterly treatment with Lochlor Bio-Klenz—a specialty product formulated to break down biofilm and enhance sanitation performance in high-temperature spa environments.
Although chlorinated pools are generally considered safe, it’s essential to know that Cryptosporidium is highly resistant to chlorine. It can survive in treated water for several days, which is why maintaining proper pool hygiene and water management is critical—especially during peak swim season.
At Direct Pool Supplies, we’re here to help you keep your pool safe, healthy, and crystal clear.
We stock a wide range of high-performance pool filtration systems, chlorinators, and advanced UV sanitation systems to help combat chlorine-resistant pathogens like Cryptosporidium. Regular water testing is key, and we offer both easy-to-use test kits and professional-grade pool chemicals, including shock treatments for thorough chlorination when needed.
Our professional servicing team can assist with everything from post-storm cleanups and shock chlorination to routine servicing and filter maintenance. We also offer upgrades for your pool system—whether it’s installing UV or ozone sanitation units or improving your overall chemical treatment routine.
To reduce the risk of contamination, we recommend following these healthy swimming habits:
- Don’t swim if you’re unwell, especially with diarrhoea. Wait at least 14 days after symptoms have stopped before swimming.
- Shower with soap before entering the pool.
- Avoid swallowing pool or spa water.
- Change nappies away from the water and wash hands thoroughly afterwards.
- Test your water frequently and maintain proper chlorine and pH levels at all times.
