Lo-Chlor — Algaecides
Pool Algaecide
🛡 Monthly preventionNo. 1 in AU & NZBlack & green algaeAll pool types
📋 How it works▾
Lo-Chlor Pool Algaecide is the number one preventative algaecide in Australia and New Zealand — a formula unchanged since the late 1970s, because it never needed to be. The 500ml bottle is a great starting size for smaller pools, or for pool owners trying Lo-Chlor's flagship algaecide for the first time.
Originally sold as Lo-Chlor Pool Conditioner, this organic copper complex formulation kills and controls both black and green algae across all pool surfaces and sanitiser types. Its dominance in the market comes from one thing: consistent results over decades of Australian conditions.
Lo-Chlor Pool Algaecide details
The No. 1 preventative algaecide formulation in Australia and New Zealand
Unchanged formula since the late 1970s — proven across Australian conditions
Kills and controls both black and green algae
Compatible with all pool surfaces and sanitiser systems
Use monthly as a preventative, or at the first sign of algae
This 500ml is ideal for regular maintenance on small to medium pools
For summer heat and heavy algae pressure, Lo-Chlor Tropiclear is the stronger choice. For winter close, use Lo-Chlor Winteriser Algaecide instead — one dose lasts the season. If your pool has a recurring algae problem, address the root cause with Lo-Chlor Starver X to strip phosphates before they fuel regrowth.
🔍 Does it suit my pool?▾
Lo-Chlor Pool Algaecide suits most pools. Select yours for specific guidance.
🧂Salt chlorinated▾
✓ Compatible — works with all salt systems
Pool Algaecide is fully compatible with salt chlorinators. Add it to the pool water separately from chlorine shock, with the pump running. Allow at least 2 hours between chlorine and algaecide additions.
💧Traditional chlorine▾
✓ Compatible — the most common use case
This is the classic application for Lo-Chlor Pool Algaecide. Monthly dosing alongside your chlorine routine provides continuous background protection against both black and green algae.
🪨Mineral / magnesium▾
✓ Compatible — works with all mineral systems
Pool Algaecide is safe for mineral and magnesium pool systems. It works independently of your sanitiser chemistry and does not affect mineral balance.
⚡Ionised / Nature2▾
⚠ Use with care — consider metal-free alternative
Pool Algaecide contains copper, which can interact with ionised systems that already introduce copper ions. Additional copper at low pH may cause staining. For ionised pools, Lo-Chlor Miraclear Metal-Free Algaecide is the correct choice — it's the world's first metal-free algaecide and includes a built-in clarifier.
🏊Fibreglass▾
✓ Compatible — safe for fibreglass surfaces
Pool Algaecide is safe for fibreglass at recommended doses. Ensure pH is in range (7.2–7.6) before adding to avoid any surface sensitivity.
🧱Concrete / pebblecrete▾
✓ Compatible — especially effective on black spot
Concrete and pebblecrete pools are particularly prone to black spot algae. The copper complex in Pool Algaecide targets black spot effectively — for persistent or heavy infestations, step up to Lo-Chlor Black Spot Algae Killer for a higher-concentration Tri-Chlor treatment.
💊 Dosage guide▾
All doses are per 50,000L of pool water. Broadcast around the pool edges with the pump running — never add directly to the skimmer box.
🛡 Monthly prevention
250 ml
per 50,000 L
Add monthly to maintain background protection. Best applied after a routine backwash.
🟢 Green algae treatment
500 ml
per 50,000 L
Shock dose for visible green algae. Super-chlorinate first, brush walls, then apply.
⚫ Black spot treatment
750 ml
per 50,000 L
Apply and brush vigorously before and after dosing. May require repeat treatment after 7 days.
Lo-Chlor Pool Algaecide was originally sold as Lo-Chlor Pool Conditioner. The organic copper complex proved so effective that it became the market standard across Australia and New Zealand. Lo-Chlor has never needed to reformulate it — the original remains the benchmark for preventative algaecide performance.
Can I swim straight after adding it?▾
Wait at least 1–2 hours after adding algaecide and allow the pump to circulate fully before swimming. This gives the product time to distribute evenly through the pool.
My pool keeps getting green. What's going on?▾
Recurring algae despite regular treatment usually means elevated phosphates — algae's food source. Test with the Lo-Chlor Starver Test Kit and treat with Lo-Chlor Starver X if levels are high. Once phosphates are removed, algaecide performance improves significantly.
Will it affect my pool water balance?▾
No — Pool Algaecide does not affect pH, alkalinity or calcium hardness. It has no impact on chlorine levels and is compatible with all sanitiser systems.
I have black spot. Is this the right product?▾
Pool Algaecide treats mild black spot. For heavy or persistent black spot infestations, Lo-Chlor Black Spot Algae Killer is a higher-concentration Tri-Chlor formula specifically designed for this algae type and works by direct contact with affected surfaces.
