📋 How it works

Lo-Chlor Starver is the original, patented phosphate remover from Lo-Chlor — the first phosphate remover developed for Australian pools, and still one of the most effective. The 2.5L provides multiple treatments for a standard residential pool — the economical choice for pools needing regular phosphate management.

Phosphates are algae's primary food source. By removing them from the water, Starver eliminates the fuel supply that allows algae to grow and return after treatment. The original formula dramatically clarifies water as a side effect of phosphate removal — a dual benefit that made it the benchmark for phosphate removers in Australia.

Lo-Chlor Starver details

  • The original patented phosphate remover from Lo-Chlor
  • Removes phosphates — eliminating algae's primary food source
  • Dramatically clarifies water as a secondary benefit
  • Compatible with all pool types and sanitiser systems
  • Test before and after application with the Starver Test Kit

For the highest-strength treatment of severe phosphate spikes (above 600 ppb), Lo-Chlor Starver X uses next-generation technology. For monthly maintenance at low phosphate levels, Lo-Chlor Starver M is the most economical ongoing option. Always confirm levels before and after with the Lo-Chlor Starver Test Kit.

🔍 Does it suit my pool?

Starver is compatible with all pool types. Select yours for specific guidance.

🧂Salt chlorinated
✓ Compatible — salt pools often accumulate higher phosphates
Salt pool owners commonly see elevated phosphate levels from sunscreen, swimwear and body products. Regular Starver dosing keeps levels in check even when chlorinator output is reduced seasonally.
💧Traditional chlorine
✓ Compatible — all chlorine systems
Apply separately from chlorine. Allow 2 hours after chlorine dosing before adding. Run filter for at least 8 hours after application.
🪨Mineral / magnesium
✓ Compatible — all mineral systems
Fully compatible with mineral and magnesium pool systems. No effect on mineral chemistry.
Ionised / Nature2
✓ Compatible — contains no copper
Starver contains no copper, making it safe for ionised pool systems. It's the preferred phosphate remover for ionised pools where copper-based products should be avoided.
🏊Fibreglass
✓ Compatible — may cause brief cloudiness
May create temporary white haze as particles bind and settle — normal, clears within 12–48 hours. Run filter continuously.
🧱Concrete / pebblecrete
✓ Compatible — important for black spot prevention
High phosphate levels are a key factor in black spot algae return in pebblecrete. Regular Starver use removes the food source.
💊 Dosage guide

Test with the Starver Test Kit before dosing. Run filter continuously for 48 hours after application.

Low (under 300 ppb)
100 ml
per 50,000 L
Maintenance dose. For ongoing monthly maintenance at this level, Starver M is more economical.
Moderate (300–600 ppb)
200 ml
per 50,000 L
Standard treatment dose. Retest after 48 hours. Repeat if still above 300 ppb.
High (600–1,000 ppb)
400 ml
per 50,000 L
Higher dose. May require repeat after 48 hours. Consider Starver X for very high concentrations.
After treatment
Backwash filter

After settled cloudiness clears, backwash the filter to remove bound phosphate particles.
❓ FAQ
Is this the same as Starver M or Starver X?
All three are Lo-Chlor phosphate removers. The original Starver is the classic formulation. Starver M is formulated for lower-strength monthly maintenance. Starver X uses next-generation technology for the highest phosphate concentrations. For standard pool maintenance, the original Starver is a reliable all-round choice.
How quickly will it work?
Results are typically visible within 24–48 hours as phosphate particles bind, settle, and are removed by the filter. Cloudiness during this period is normal. Retest phosphate levels after 48 hours to confirm levels have dropped.
Will it affect my water balance?
No — Starver is pH neutral and does not affect chlorine, alkalinity or calcium hardness. It works solely on phosphate removal.
