Why commercial pools need photometric water testing

Test strips measure colour changes interpreted by the human eye. Results shift with lighting, the operator, and strip age. That's an acceptable margin for a backyard pool. For a facility with a duty of care to the public, it isn't.

Minimum for commercial compliance: the Pooltest 6. The Pooltest 3 omits alkalinity and calcium hardness, so it isn't suitable for commercial use.

Australian pool compliance testing requirements

Every state and territory in Australia has legislation governing public pool water quality. In NSW it's the Public Health Act 2010 and Public Health Regulation 2022. Victoria operates under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008. Queensland pools are covered by the Public Health Act 2005, South Australia under the South Australian Public Health Act 2011, Western Australia under the Health Act 1911, and equivalent frameworks apply in Tasmania, the ACT and the NT.
