Cartridge Care: Cleaning & Replacement Guide

Keeping your cartridge clean maintains water clarity, protects your pump, and extends the life of the filter element. Follow the steps below and always refer to your pool equipment manufacturer's manual for model-specific service intervals.

When to Clean

Clean your cartridge when you notice either of the following warning signs — do not wait for both to appear together:

• Rising filter pressure: A sustained pressure increase of approximately 8–10 psi (55–70 kPa) above your clean starting pressure is a common service indicator. Check your pool maker's manual for the threshold specific to your filter model.
• Reduced water flow: Noticeably weaker return jets or sluggish circulation, even when the pump is running normally, indicate the cartridge needs attention.

Heavy bather load, algae blooms, storms, or periods of high debris will shorten intervals between cleans — inspect more frequently during these events.

How to Clean (Manufacturer-Approved Steps)

1. Turn off the pump and release any pressure from the filter tank before opening the lid.
2. Remove the cartridge carefully and take it to a suitable wash area away from the pool.
3. Rinse with a garden hose — use a firm, straight stream of water directed at a 45° angle into the pleats, working from top to bottom. Rotate the cartridge and repeat until the water running off is clear.
4. Do not use a high-pressure washer directly on the pleats — excessive pressure can damage the Reemay media and reduce filtration performance.
5. For deeper cleaning, soak the cartridge in a manufacturer-approved cartridge cleaner or a dilute filter-cleaning solution. Follow the product label for soak time, then rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
6. Allow the cartridge to dry if a spare element is in service, or reinstall once rinsed. Inspect the O-ring on the filter lid before closing — replace if cracked or flattened.
7. Restart the pump and note the clean starting pressure on your pressure gauge. Record this as your new baseline.

When to Replace

Even with regular cleaning, cartridge media degrades over time. Replace your cartridge if you observe any of the following:

• Pleats that are torn, collapsed, or permanently flattened
• Visible holes, rips, or fraying in the filter fabric
• Filter pressure that spikes back up quickly after cleaning, or that no longer returns to near the original clean baseline
• Persistent water cloudiness or poor water quality despite correct chemistry and regular cleaning
• Discolouration, brittleness, or a strong chemical odour in the media that does not clear after soaking
