Why is my pool light not working?

There are a small handful of reasons why your pool light might not be working which are:

  • Water has gotten into the light
  • The globe has died
  • The LEDs have died
  • The Transformer has died
  • The cable has been damaged
  • The powerpoint the transformer is connected to has malfunctioned

Of the listed reasons, the top 3 are by far the most common reasons for a pool light to not be working. As you start looking at more advanced multi-colour lights and their remote drivers, it could also potentially be an issue with the driver as well.

Why do pool lights need replacing?

The main reason a pool light will ever need replacing is that water has gotten into the light fixture. Regardless of LED or Halogen light as soon as water gets into the light, it needs to be disconnected from power and replaced when possible. Additionally, with LED lights, they will need to be replaced when the LEDs die, as unlike Halogen lights they don’t have a single globe that can be replaced as a spare part.

How do I know if I need a new pool light transformer?

Knowing if you need a new pool light transformer can be a difficult process. If you have a bit of electrical know-how the simplest way would be to attach a multimeter to the output terminals to see if it's outputting the power it's supposed to be. If you don’t have that know-how, it would probably be recommended to call an electrician to test the transformer. If you can see any damage to the transformer, especially if the internal elements are exposed, you should replace it immediately

How long do pool lights last?

The lifespan of pool lights vary greatly based on a few factors. Halogen lights are rated for around 2500 hours and LED lights are rated for up to 30000 hours.

The lights themselves can last for up to 10 years but some of the other components won’t last nearly as long and may cause the light to need replacing.

Can a pool light electrocute you?

No. A properly installed light is sealed and should have no electronics touching the pool water. When installing a new light, you should always turn off the power to the light to avoid getting electrocuted.
