📋 How it works

Lo-Chlor Salt Cell Cleaner Plus is a phosphoric acid-based salt chlorinator cell cleaning solution that removes calcium scale without the risks of hydrochloric acid — safe for precious metal cell plates, reusable, and compatible with all major salt cell brands.

Salt chlorinator cells develop calcium carbonate scale on their plates over time, which reduces chlorine output and forces the system to work harder. Regular cell cleaning is essential for performance and longevity. Unlike traditional HCl (hydrochloric acid) cleaning which can damage precious metal coatings on cell plates, Salt Cell Cleaner Plus removes scale without harming the cell.

Lo-Chlor Salt Cell Cleaner Plus details

  • Phosphoric acid formula — does not contain hydrochloric acid
  • Safe on precious metal coatings of salt chlorinator cell plates
  • Removes calcium scale and organic build-up from cells
  • Reusable solution — use multiple cleanings per litre
  • Compatible with all major salt cell brands
  • Available in 1L and 5L
  • Prolongs salt cell life and maintains chlorine output efficiency

Choosing your size: The 1L provides multiple cleanings for a standard residential cell. The 5L is economical for regular quarterly cleaning, commercial pools, or properties with multiple salt systems.

For ongoing scale prevention between cleanings, Lo-Chlor Stain & Scale Defence dosed weekly significantly reduces calcium buildup on cell plates. Lo-Chlor Aquaguard CSM provides triple-action cell, scale and metal protection as a comprehensive cell care program.

🔍 Is it right for my system?

Salt Cell Cleaner Plus is designed specifically for salt chlorinator cell maintenance.

🧂Salt chlorinated pool
✓ Primary use — essential maintenance product
This is the correct product for salt chlorinator cell cleaning. Regular cleaning every 3 months maintains efficiency and extends cell life.
Any salt cell brand
✓ Compatible with all major brands
Compatible with Davey, Zodiac, Saltmate, Madimack and all other major Australian salt cell brands.
💧Liquid chlorine pool
✗ Not applicable — liquid chlorine pools don't have cells
Liquid chlorine pools don't have electrolytic cells. No cell cleaning product is needed for these systems.
🔵New installation
✓ Recommended from the start
Start cleaning quarterly from installation. Regular maintenance from new prevents heavy scale buildup that is harder to remove.
🏭Commercial salt systems
✓ 5L is most economical
For commercial installations with larger cells or more frequent cleaning requirements, the 5L is the practical choice.
HCl alternative
✓ Safer alternative to hydrochloric acid
Replaces hazardous HCl acid for cell cleaning with a safer phosphoric acid formula that won't damage cell plate coatings.
💊 How to use

Remove cell from the system before cleaning. Follow cell manufacturer's guidance for removal procedure.

Standard cell cleaning
Pure or diluted 50:50
cell immersion
Remove cell, stand upright, fill with Salt Cell Cleaner Plus (pure or 1:1 with water). Soak 15–30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.
Heavy scale buildup
Pure solution
extended soak
For heavily scaled cells, use undiluted and soak for up to 1 hour. Do not exceed recommended contact time.
Reuse solution
Solution reusable
2–3 cleanings
The solution can be reused. Store in a sealed container between uses. Discard when it becomes heavily discoloured.
Cleaning frequency
Every 3 months
or as needed
Quarterly cleaning is standard practice. Check cell output — reduced chlorine production is the first sign of scale buildup.
❓ FAQ
Why is phosphoric acid better than hydrochloric acid for cell cleaning?
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is very effective at removing scale but can damage the precious metal (ruthenium/iridium) coatings on electrolytic cell plates over time, shortening cell life. Phosphoric acid is gentler on these coatings while still effectively dissolving calcium carbonate scale.
How often should I clean my salt cell?
Every 3 months is the standard recommendation. Some pools need it more often (hard water areas, pools running continuously) and some less often (well-maintained pools with consistent Stain & Scale Defence use). The trigger is output — if your chlorinator reports low production, check the cell first.
My cell is still scaled after soaking. What next?
Try a longer soak (up to 1 hour) with undiluted solution. For very old or heavily scaled cells, the scale may be so thick that it requires multiple treatment cycles. If scale still doesn't shift after several treatments, the cell may need professional servicing or replacement.
Can I clean the cell without removing it?
No — the cell should be removed for cleaning. Using acid-based cleaners in the installed position risks chemical entering the pool water and potentially damaging other plumbing components.
