Preparing Your Pool for Winter
A bit of preparation now means clean, clear, swimmable water the moment warm weather returns — no remediation, no nasty surprises.
Even if you've stretched your swimming season with a pool heater, there comes a point where the water gets put on pause. Getting the chemistry right before that happens — and keeping up with light maintenance through the cooler months — is what separates a pool that's ready to swim in spring from one that needs a week of work first.
Closing your pool — what you'll need
Getting your pool winter-ready doesn't require a lot, but skipping any of these will make spring a harder job:
How much algaecide do I need for winter?
The right amount of algaecide depends on a few variables. Before dosing, aim to correct any existing imbalances first — algaecide works best in a pool that's already in reasonable shape.
Algon Hotzone & LoChlor Pool Algaecide
Both products are formulated for 50,000 litre pools and come in 1 litre bottles sized to last a typical winter. Depending on the length of your off-season — anywhere from 2 to 5 months — you may need one or two bottles. Always check the label and adjust dosage for your pool's volume.

If keeping track of it all feels like a lot, that's because it is. Use our winter pool maintenance checklist to make sure nothing gets missed — and set calendar reminders for your monthly water tests.
What if you don't cover your pool in winter?
Covering your pool is strongly recommended — it reduces evaporation, keeps debris out, and lowers your chemical demand significantly. But if you're leaving your pool uncovered, you'll need to compensate with the right product.
Miraclear Blocks
Miraclear blocks are designed for uncovered pools. Each block combines a clarifier to keep the water visually clear with a phosphate remover to prevent algae from taking hold — the same two-pronged approach you'd get from a full winteriser kit. Each block lasts around 30 days, so add one per month for the duration of your winter closure.
