Understanding the Aquaspa Spa Sanitisation System

Key Takeaways

  • Aquaspa uses PHMB (polyhexanide) — a hospital-grade antimicrobial used in wound care and burn treatment — not a marketing claim, it is clinically established technology
  • The 3-step weekly routine has specific doses: Sanitiser at 60ml per 1000L, Shock at 20g per 1000L, Spa Kleer at 60ml per 1000L — in that order
  • PHMB and chlorine destroy each other on contact — tap water contains chlorine, so Chlorine Remover is the mandatory first step every time you fill or refill with fresh water
  • When switching from a chlorine or bromine system, you must run Pipe Klenz through the existing water and drain completely first — you cannot convert in-situ
  • Aquaspa targets slightly different water balance parameters than some other systems: pH 7.4-7.6, alkalinity 120-150ppm, calcium hardness 200-275ppm

The Aquaspa system by Lo-Chlor is a chlorine and bromine-free spa sanitisation system built around PHMB — a clinically proven antimicrobial with no fumes, no harsh odour, and a straightforward 3-step weekly routine.

What is PHMB?

PHMB (polyhexanide, or poly hexamethylene biguanide) is used extensively in healthcare for its high antimicrobial properties. It works by damaging the cell membranes of bacteria and fungi, effectively eliminating them. In clinical settings it is used in wound care, burn treatment and infection prevention. It is also used to sanitise water — which is the basis of the Aquaspa system.

Why Choose Aquaspa?

🚫

Chlorine and bromine free

No harsh sanitiser chemicals in the water

🌬️

Odourless

No chemical fumes unlike conventional spa sanitisers

🧴

Simple 3-step routine

Easy weekly maintenance that requires no technical knowledge

The Weekly 3-Step Routine

Once your spa is set up and balanced, maintaining it with Aquaspa is a consistent weekly process. The three steps always follow this order:

1

Aquaspa Spa Sanitiser

Kills bacteria and microorganisms using PHMB. The core of the system — the water cannot be kept safe without this step.

Weekly dose

60ml

per 1000L

2

Aquaspa Spa Shock

Oxidises the water to remove body fats, oils and other organic contaminants. Frees up the sanitiser molecules to keep killing bacteria.

Weekly dose

20g

per 1000L

3

Aquaspa Spa Kleer

A natural clarifier that removes fine particles and polishes the water to crystal clear. The finishing step of every weekly dose.

Weekly dose

60ml

per 1000L

Keeping Your Water Balanced

The 3-step routine keeps the water sanitised and clear, but water balance needs to be checked and maintained separately. Test pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness regularly and adjust to these targets:

pH

7.4 - 7.6

Total Alkalinity

120 - 150 ppm

Calcium Hardness

200 - 275 ppm

Good filtration is equally important. Clean and replace your filter cartridges regularly using Aquaspa Instant Filter Klenz.

Setting Up a Brand New Spa with Aquaspa

1

Clean the shell

Remove the cover and wipe down the spa to clear any manufacturing dust or debris before filling.

2

Fill via the filter box

Place the hose in the spa's filter box and fill to the recommended water level.

3

Add Aquaspa Chlorine Remover — this step is mandatory

Tap water contains chlorine, which destroys PHMB on contact. Add the Chlorine Remover according to your water volume, switch on the filtration pump and leave for 30 minutes before proceeding.

4

Test the water

Use the Aquaspa Insta Test Strips to check pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness against the target ranges above.

5

Balance the water

Use pH Reducer, Alkalinity Enhancer or Calcium Enhancer as indicated by your test results.

6

Add Spa Sanitiser — run pump for 1 hour

Add 60ml per 1000L of Aquaspa Spa Sanitiser and run the filter pump for one hour.

7

Add Spa Shock — run pump for 30 minutes

Add 20g per 1000L of Aquaspa Spa Shock and run the filter pump for 30 minutes.

8

Add Spa Kleer — run pump for 30 minutes

Add 60ml per 1000L of Aquaspa Spa Kleer and run the pump for another 30 minutes.

9

Run filter pump for 6 hours

Continue filtering until the water runs clear.

10

Clean the filter cartridge after 24 hours

After 24 hours, clean the filter cartridge with Aquaspa Instant Filter Klenz.

Switching an Existing Spa to Aquaspa

If you are converting from a chlorine or bromine system, you must flush and drain the spa first — you cannot switch systems in existing water.

1

Deep clean the filter cartridges

Remove existing cartridges and soak in Aquaspa Instant Filter Klenz.

2

Flush the pipes with Aquaspa Pipe Klenz

Add 250ml per 1000L of current spa water and run the filter pump for two hours to flush oils and residue from the plumbing.

3

Drain and clean the shell

Dump the water completely. Remove any foam or residue and wipe down the interior with a cloth before refilling.

4

Refill and reinstall cartridges

Refill with fresh water and replace the cleaned filter cartridges.

5

Follow the new spa setup from Step 3

Start from the Chlorine Remover step in the new spa guide above and follow through to the end.
